Dr. Yuri van Hoef

Yuri van Hoef (PhD Leeds) is a Lecturer in the Department of History, Erasmus University Rotterdam. His research mainly deals with how individual friendships (“friendcraft”) between state leaders affect international relations. Broadly speaking, he is interested in how different contemporary and historical conceptualizations of friendship affect foreign and domestic politics. Empirically, Yuri has studied the US-UK special relationship, and Franco-German reconciliation. Currently, he is involved in a project bringing together narratives from the global south on friendship (focus on China), and a project studying the unique ‘friendcraft’ of middle powers (like Denmark and the Netherlands).
