Literature

This repository offers an overview of the growing literature in friendship studies, with a focus on the field of Politics and International Relations. From classical texts to contemporary analyses of interpersonal ties between leaders, alliance dynamics, peace building projects, or decolonial solidarity movements, they show the multifaceted nature of friendship in politics, their impact on societies and regimes of governance, and how they shape processes of cooperation and conflict on the world stage. As we consider this an interdisciplinary area of research, the list also includes publications from political theory, philosophy, sociology, cultural studies and anthropology, but without the ambition to provide a complete overview in those areas.

We hope this list provides a useful resource for anyone interested in scholarship on different conceptualisations of friendship and their expressions in the real world. While we cannot provide access here to the full texts, we continuously update and organise this index and welcome suggestions for titles to add.
